Recent Important Issues
Toms River, NJ

Two major issues have been the topic of much talk and a lot of press coverage lately here in Toms River, New Jersey.

  • The first issue is, should the Parkway Well field drinking wells be moved to an area that is not being impacted by a superfund site?

    Landfill Cell

As new scientific understanding of ground water modeling advances, are we sure we understand the whole picture of what has happened here in Toms River, NJ? New research suggests that certain chemical plumes have the ability to dive under the water tables and go undetected by shallow ground monitoring wells or more commonly called sentinel wells. If moving the Parkway Well field should happen, we, the community should have a say into the criteria that a new location must meet before any such location is chosen.

  • Secondly, should the Ciba Geigy Superfund site (supposedly "clean" area's) be purchased for open space?

    Landfill Cell

Looking at all land in Toms River, NJ for potential open space is a positive thing. To look at a superfund site for use as an "open space" area is another question that needs to be approached carefully. We need to look at the whole picture, proposed cleanup activities and future cleanup activities, before any child is allowed to play on that land. One would have to ask, don't we already have enough monitoring wells on our public lands? Who knows if monitoring of the clean area's in the future will occur. Early on no one predicted all the monitoring wells in Winding River Park.
