TOMS RIVER BUREAU
DOVER TOWNSHIP — Councilwoman Maria Maruca said private wells in the township's Windsor Park section will be tested to state and Ocean County Board of Health standards and will not undergo the more rigorous testing that has been done on United Water Toms River's drinking water system.
Maruca said Wednesday that she misspoke when she suggested that private wells the township plans to test were to be tested to more stringent standards advocated by the Citizens Action Committee on Childhood Cancer Cluster.
United Water's system has been tested regularly for about 200 compounds and chemicals as part of an investigation into elevated levels of some childhood cancers here. Public water systems in the state are normally tested for about 80 chemicals and compounds.
The citizens committee has never advocated more extensive testing for private wells and has instead suggested that any water coming into United's system through interconnections with Manchester and New Jersey-American Water Co. should be tested to the more stringent standard.
