TOMS RIVER -- Due to the current heat wave and a high demand for water, the interconnection between United Water Toms River and the New Jersey American Water Company has been activated, Mayor Raymond P. Fox announced yesterday.
Fox said the action was precautionary, since the upcoming forecast calls for hot, dry weather and demands for water are expected to rise in the coming days.
Fox added that United Water Toms River is continuing to supply Island Heights with water. He urged residents in both municipalities to use water wisely and observe the odd-even approach. For example, he said, if a resident's address is an odd number, he or she would water their lawn on an odd-numbered day.
George Flegal, manager of United Water Toms River, said customers who observe United Water Toms River's evapotranspiration -- or ET -- program, can avoid over-watering of lawns and lessen the the strain on the company's facilities.
If more water is needed, United Water Toms River then turns on Well 20, an Indian Head Road well with elevated levels of naturally occurring radiation.
