Order amid Chaos

Water utikity should attend

TOPIC OF THE DAY
Cancer probe presses on

I was shocked and disappointed at the Aug.2 meeting of the Citizen's Action Committee on the Childhood Cancer Cluster when I heard that Edward Hughmanic, general manager of United Water, Toms River; and Rich Henning, the company spokesman, do not plan to attend any more meetings this year. Their absence was noticed early in the meeting, as they have been regular fixtures there for the last three years.

We felt that their presence showed that they respected and cared about the residents of Toms River and wanted to help uncover the truth about the higher incidence of cancer in the children here.

Now, after all this time, has their concern for this problem left with them? It makes me wonder if their concern for this problem always centered on themselves. They seem motivated by the fear of inadvertently saying more than they want the public to know. Why else would they require more time to respond?

They could do what the other agencies on the hot seat do when they are unable to answer, tell us they will find out and respond at the next meeting.

Even during this drought they are managing to turn their names to Mudd. The absence of Henning and Hughmanic from these monthly meetings is showing the residents of Toms River who United Water thinks is important, and it's apparently not us.
