TOMS RIVER BUREAU
TOMS RIVER -- A Dover Township committeeman has asked the state Department of Environmental Protection to extend the deadline for residents to comment on the township's proposal to build a garbage-transfer station at the public works yard.
Committeeman Clarence E. "Bud" Aldrich III said last night that he wrote to the DEP asking for a two-week extension on the comment period after hearing from many residents who said they needed more time to submit written statements.
Thursday is the deadline for submitting comments to the DEP, but Aldrich said he hopes the deadline can be extended to Aug. 19.
Some residents who live near the public works yard have have voiced opposition to the transfer station, which they say could increase truck traffic and odors in their neighborhood.
Others have said they do not think the station should be built at the public works yard, which is located at the site of Dover's former landfill.
The DEP is supervising an ongoing investigation of the landfill's possible effects on ground water in the area.
The township has applied to the DEP to build an 8,000-square-foot transfer station at the public works yard, 1672 Church Road. The transfer station will be able to accommodate up to 250 tons of trash a day and will also be used to store Dover's recyclables.
Aldrich has said he believes the transfer station will save Dover about $1,000 a day by cutting down the number of trips that public works employees must make to the Ocean County Landfill in neighboring Manchester.
Residents can send written comments about the transfer station to: Thomas Sherman, Assistant Director, Office of Permitting & Technical Programs, Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste, Department of Environmental Protection, 401 E. State St., P.O. Box 414, Trenton, NJ 08625-0414.
