TOMS RIVER -- Representatives from the federal Environmental Protection Agency will be on hand in the Dover Township municipal building tomorrow night to discuss ways to clean up portions of the Ciba Superfund site.
The session will get under way at 7 p.m. in the second-floor committee meeting room, said EPA spokesman Nina Habib Spencer.
EPA and Ciba officials will discuss bioremediation, a technology that uses microorganisms such as bacteria to transform harmful substances into nontoxic compounds, Spencer said.
"It's one of several technologies that may be applicable to the cleanup of the Ciba Superfund site," Spencer said.
The EPA is also looking a thermal treatment that uses heat to vaporize contaminants and remove them from the soil.
The thermal treatment and bioremediation are the two options researchers believe could work best to remove the more hazardous substances from the site.
The rest of the possible technologies will be presented at a meeting in late May, she said.
Community input will play a part in the final selection, Spencer said.
"A lot of it depends on our meetings with the community, what we are hearing from the community in terms of various technologies," she said. "The process will go on as long as necessary, keeping in mind the community has expressed its hope in seeing the Ciba site cleaned up sooner than later. A lot of the process will depend on community involvement."
