Biological Treatment (Composting)
Composting is an on-site ex situ biological treatment technology
-Biological breakdown of contaminants is enhanced by providing essential nutrients and oxygen for microbial growth
-Contaminants are reduced to less toxic compounds or converted to carbon dioxide and water
Technology applicable to contaminated soils waste and sludge
Composting
Treatment Process:
- Implemented in treatment cells or rows
-Moisture nutrients and bulking agent are mixed with the contaminated soils or waste
-Air is passed through the compost mixture to promote aerobic degradation
Composting treatability study in progress to evaluate technology
Thermal Treatment
Thermal treatment is an ex situ technology that uses heat to vaporize contaminants and remove them from soils or other media
Technology is applicable to soils, solid waste and sludge
Thermal Treatment Process
Destructive Treatment
-The vaporized contaminants are reacted with oxygen and converted to water, carbon dioxide and inorganic oxides or acids
Non-Destructive Treatment
-The vaporized contaminants are condensed and collected on filter media (i.e., carbon)
Landfilling
Landfills are constructed and managed for the disposal of hazardous or non-hazardous material
-Classes of landfills (Subtitle C, D)
Material can be disposed of in either an on-site or off-site landfill
Applicability of Technologies to Other Source Areas
Backfilled Lagoon Area
Filtercake Disposal Area
- Trench Disposal Area
Other portions of the Drum Disposal Area
Stacked Drum Area - Applicability of Technologies to Drum Contents
